Ummelina International Day Spa Opening Second Location in Downtown Yakima
Seattle-based Ummelina International Day Spa announced in early August that they will be expanding to the Yakima Valley. Construction of the spa is underway, with a grand opening planned for the fall.
Ummelina's mission is to expand its premier position in the Spa Industry by opening Urban Spa Retreats in under-serviced destination locations in the Pacific Northwest. After 22 years in a single location, Nina Ummel, the founder and president, made downtown Yakima her first choice of location. Ummelina Yakima Valley Spa Retreat was the vision of Ummel's new business partner Meghann Lawrence who grew up in Naches, WA. Ummel also grew up in a rural area and together they decided to go back to their roots. The Yakima Valley was the first place they looked and according to Ummel they were excited about "the Valley's growth, the renaissance occurring in the downtown area and the location by the Hilton Garden Inn."
The women spent time talking with locals and their current Yakima clientele who "confirmed that Yakima was ready for Ummelina."
The design of the space is a crucial element to Ummel who is committed to using a nature-inspired theme that honors the Yakima Valley. She plans to use colors and textures that celebrate Yakima's vineyards, hop fields, and tribal history and is dedicated to building green, using recycled materials and natural fibers. She and Lawrence will also personalize their products, designing natural skin and body care remedies that reflect the local culture, with a Wine Collection and Hops Collection, as well as Organic Herbal Tea bottled in Yakima.
The Yakima spa will offer Ummelina's expansive menu of treatments, from a rich variety of massage packages to facials, manicures and pedicures, and exotic shower treatments. The spa will also open onto a plaza which will house an outdoor tea garden, complete with hand-blended teas, cabana seating, fireplace and outdoor treatments
Ummelina's presence in Yakima will have an enormous impact on development in downtown. Sean Hawkins, Deputy Executive Director of The Committee for Downtown Yakima comments that "the addition of Ummelina to our downtown business community is positive proof that our emerging downtown is well on its way to becoming a thriving destination." Ummelina will be employing 20-25 people and will be investing $650,000 into the project.
